Frankfurt adds cooling buses and new shelters for homeless amid heat wave

The city of Frankfurt has deployed two decommissioned buses fitted with mobile air‑conditioning units as temporary cooling stations for people experiencing homelessness. Located on Willy‑Brandt‑Platz, the "Kühlmobile" are open daily from 13:00 to 19:00, provide drinking water, and are staffed by Johanniter‑Unfall‑Hilfe volunteers and a security service. The initiative, announced by Social and Health Councillor Elke Voitl, is intended to run until the end of August and may be extended if needed.

In parallel, Frankfurt has identified four sites to serve as new homeless shelters after a subway station was closed for fire‑safety reasons. The Henriette‑Fürth‑Haus in the Gutleutviertel and the Tagestreff Weser 5 in the Bahnhofsviertel will each accommodate more than 70 people starting in August, while Haus Lichtblick and an unnamed downtown building will add a further 75 beds in September. All facilities are operated by Caritas Frankfurt and Diakonie Frankfurt & Offenbach on behalf of the city, and the temporary tents in the Bockenheimer Anlage will be removed as the new shelters become operational.
