Frankfurt Airport malaria cases lead to three deaths

A series of malaria infections, specifically the dangerous Malaria tropica (Plasmodium falciparum) variety, has been reported in the vicinity of Frankfurt Airport. Following earlier cases among airport employees in July and August, which resulted in two deaths, two additional residents of the Schwanheim district have been infected. One of these new cases has since resulted in a death, bringing the total number of malaria-related fatalities in the Frankfurt airport context to three.

Health authorities suspect the infections are linked to mosquitoes that may have arrived via aircraft from endemic regions, a phenomenon referred to as airport malaria. The infected residents had not recently traveled to malaria-endemic areas and were not employees of the airport.

The Frankfurt health department has expanded mosquito monitoring to the Schwanheim district and issued advisories for residents and workers near the airport to use repellents, wear protective clothing, and install mosquito nets. Doctors have been urged to consider malaria as a possibility in patients presenting with unexplained fever, even without a recent history of travel to endemic zones.
