Frankfurt Airport expands with new Terminal 3 and AI‑driven ground‑handling system

Frankfurt Airport opened Terminal 3, adding new passenger routes and a rapid Sky Line train that connects the terminal to the existing terminals in about eight minutes. The new layout influences parking and valet services, prompting many providers to adjust fees for drop‑off at Terminal 3, while alternative drop‑off at Terminal 1 remains cheaper.

At the same airport, Fraport is installing an AI‑based monitoring system for aircraft turnaround. Up to three 4K cameras will cover each of the 180 ground‑handling positions, feeding video to software developed by Lufthansa’s zeroG subsidiary. The system automatically detects the start and end of tasks such as boarding‑bridge docking, baggage loading and refuelling, sending real‑time updates to airport control and airlines to shorten turnaround times. Video processing stays on‑site on Dell‑provided Azure‑Local servers equipped with Nvidia L40S GPUs, with redundant clusters to ensure reliability.
