Lufthansa and Swiss authorities respond to jet fuel supply constraints

Lufthansa and Swiss authorities are responding to jet fuel supply constraints at Frankfurt and Zurich airports. To mitigate potential shortages, Lufthansa has implemented fuel tankering, instructing crews on selected flights to carry extra fuel from other locations to reduce the demand at its Frankfurt hub. The airline noted this is a precautionary measure and does not expect flight cancellations.

At Frankfurt Airport, the supply tension is attributed to routine pipeline maintenance and low water levels on the Rhine, which limit the capacity of fuel tankers. However, airport operator Fraport stated that operational capability remains unaffected due to substantial storage capacity and alternative supply routes.

In Switzerland, the government has authorized the withdrawal of up to 30,000 cubic meters of jet fuel from mandatory strategic reserves to support Zurich Airport. This decision follows disruptions in international rail freight and low Rhine water levels, which have delayed essential fuel deliveries.
