Frankfurt Airport malaria cluster results in third death

The death toll from malaria in the Frankfurt area has risen to three following a cluster of infections linked to the vicinity of Frankfurt Airport. The most recent fatality occurred in the Schwanheim district, located approximately five kilometers from the airport.

Previously, two airport employees died from malaria infections in July and August. In total, six employees at the airport were reported to have contracted the disease. The recent cases in Schwanheim involved residents who had not traveled to malaria-endemic regions and did not work at the airport.

Health authorities are investigating the possibility of ‘airport malaria,’ a phenomenon where infected Anopheles mosquitoes are transported to new regions via aircraft or luggage. The Robert Koch Institute noted that these mosquitoes can travel distances of five to ten kilometers. Officials have advised local residents and workers to monitor for symptoms such as unexplained fever and seek medical attention immediately.
