Frankfurt Airport malaria outbreak kills two employees
A rare outbreak of malaria at Frankfurt Airport has resulted in the deaths of two employees and the infection of four others. Health authorities suspect the transmission occurred via infected mosquitoes that arrived at the airport aboard an aircraft from a malaria-endemic region.
All six infected individuals were diagnosed with malaria tropica, the most severe form of the disease caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite. The first cases were identified in early July, with subsequent infections occurring in mid-August. While the four surviving workers have been discharged from the hospital, investigators are working to determine if the infections were caused by a single mosquito or multiple vectors.
To assist the investigation, mosquito traps have been installed at the airport, and captured insects are being analyzed in laboratories to identify their species and origin. The Robert Koch Institute has classified the incident as an unusual case of ‘airport malaria.’
Health officials emphasize that the risk to the general public and travelers in Frankfurt remains very low, as malaria is not transmitted through person-to-person contact, coughing, or sharing spaces, but requires a mosquito bite. Experts note that current environmental conditions in Germany do not support a permanent or stable population of malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
