Fraport and Greece report growth in aviation and energy sectors
Fraport AG reports growth across its global airport network for September 2026, with total passenger numbers rising by 2.7% to 21.1 million. Frankfurt Airport saw a 1.6% increase in passengers, reaching 6.1 million, while cargo volume grew by 2.5%. In Greece, Fraport Greece managed 5.7 million passengers in September, a 4.2% year-on-year increase. Notable growth was seen at Skiathos and Kefalonia, which both surpassed their total 2025 passenger volumes within the first nine months of 2026.
In the energy sector, DESFA reports that Greece is strengthening its role as a strategic energy hub for Southeast Europe. During the first nine months of 2026, total natural gas demand in Greece rose by 12.72% to 63.53 TWh. This was driven by a 168.77% surge in gas exports, reaching 13.60 TWh. LNG imports via the Alexandroupolis FSRU ‘Amphitrite’ increased significantly, growing over 465% compared to the same period in 2025, now accounting for approximately 19% of the country's total LNG inflows.
Meanwhile, Düsseldorf Airport anticipates a peak travel period during the autumn holidays from October 16 to November 1, expecting approximately 1.3 million passengers and 8,300 flight movements. The airport predicts October 18 could be its busiest day of the year with nearly 87,000 travelers.
