Frankfurt and Mainz book fairs highlight German literary scene
The Frankfurt Book Fair 2026 drew 236,000 visitors and 4,000 exhibitors. While remaining a major international hub for negotiating publishing rights and professional contracts, the event saw a decline in exhibitor numbers compared to 2019, when there were 7,450 exhibitors.
In a more intimate setting, the 25th Mainz Book Fair is taking place, featuring 55 regional and national publishers. The event provides a platform for authors and artists to present works ranging from graphic novels to non-fiction. A highlight of the Mainz fair is the presentation of the ‘Debut of the Year 2026’ literary prize, awarded to Tobias Heinze.
Additionally, the BuCon event celebrated its 40th anniversary in Dreieich-Sprendlingen, hosting over 1,000 visitors and focusing on the fantasy genre and independent authors.
