Zurich and Frankfurt airports face kerosene supply disruptions
Major European aviation hubs, specifically Frankfurt and Zurich, are facing significant kerosene supply disruptions due to logistical challenges. In Switzerland, authorities have authorized the release of up to 30 million liters of aviation fuel from national strategic reserves to prevent shortages at Zurich Airport. This intervention, approved by Roland Pfister, is a response to delays in German freight rail transport and low water levels on the Rhine, which have hindered traditional fuel delivery methods.
At Frankfurt Airport, the situation is driven by low Rhine water levels affecting tanker ships and scheduled maintenance on a critical kerosene pipeline. To mitigate the risk of flight cancellations, Lufthansa has implemented ‘tankering’ measures, instructing pilots to take on extra fuel during select flights to reduce the immediate demand in Frankfurt. Swiss International Air Lines is also adopting similar precautionary refueling strategies.
Despite these logistical hurdles, flight operations at both major hubs currently remain stable without widespread cancellations. While the Swiss government is utilizing its emergency reserves to bridge the gap, the situation highlights the vulnerability of international aviation hubs to regional energy and transport infrastructure disruptions.
