Frankfurt court sentences driver in fatal e-scooter collision

A 24-year-old driver has been sentenced to three years in prison by the Frankfurt District Court following a fatal accident involving e-scooters. The driver, a stateless individual originally from Syria residing in Bad Kreuznach, had consumed nitrous oxide (laughing gas) prior to the incident on July 5, 2025.

While driving at excessive speeds in Frankfurt's city center, the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck two e-scooters. The collision resulted in the deaths of 23-year-old twin brothers; one died instantly, and the other passed away in the hospital hours later. A 27-year-old man on a second scooter was severely injured, losing a lower leg after being thrown onto the car's hood and subsequently falling onto tram tracks. The driver continued driving at speed despite the collision.

The defendant was convicted of attempted murder regarding the injury to the second scooter rider and negligent homicide for the deaths of the twins.
