Christian M. gets life for pushing wife off Frankfurt hotel balcony

On 31 July 2026 the Frankfurt Landgericht sentenced 60‑year‑old Christian M. to life imprisonment for murder after he pushed his 40‑year‑old wife Marta M. from the balcony of the 22nd‑floor Leonardo Royal hotel in Frankfurt, causing her to fall about 60 m and die instantly.

The court said the motive was to avoid a costly divorce and to benefit from a €400,000 life‑insurance payout and a €10,000 accident policy, allowing him to start a new life with a younger lover. Investigators noted he had researched “unnoticeable killing methods” online and booked the hotel room the day before the May 2023 incident.

The trial began on 1 April 2026, lasted four months, and the defendant remained silent throughout; his defence had sought acquittal and he intends to appeal the verdict.
