Frankfurt designated as World Design Capital for 2026

Frankfurt is increasingly positioning itself as a major cultural destination, moving beyond its reputation as a financial hub and home to the European Central Bank. The city, often nicknamed ‘Mainhattan’ due to its skyline, offers extensive leisure opportunities including a rich heritage of music, festivals, theaters, and the prominent Museumsufer museum district.

In a significant move for its cultural profile, Frankfurt and the surrounding Rhine-Main region have been designated as the World Design Capital for 2026. Under the theme ‘Design for democracy. Atmospheres for a better life’, the year-long program will focus on how design can address contemporary urban challenges, such as sustainable construction, affordable housing, eco-friendly mobility, and social integration in a cosmopolitan environment.
