Reza Pahlavi accepts Freedom Prize in Frankfurt amid mass demonstrations

Reza Pahlavi, the son of the former Iranian Shah, accepted the 2026 Freedom Prize from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Frankfurt, Germany. The award was intended to honor the Iranian people for their struggle for freedom and democracy.

Pahlavi accepted the prize as a temporary custodian, stating he intends to hand it over to the legitimate representatives of the Iranian people in Tehran once the current government falls. His role as a representative has drawn significant controversy, with critics and various German political figures arguing that he does not represent the diverse Iranian opposition.

The ceremony in the Paulskirche was accompanied by large-scale demonstrations. Police reported approximately 5,000 demonstrators in the city center by midday, while a major rally in Ostpark drew roughly 20,000 supporters. While the gatherings were largely peaceful, one man was arrested following reports of a livestream in which he allegedly announced criminal acts. A small counter-demonstration of about 20 people also took place.
