Frankfurt explosions trigger investigation into organized crime
A series of improvised explosive device detonations has targeted businesses in Frankfurt and Offenbach, prompting a major investigation by Hessian authorities into organized crime.
On Thursday morning, two blasts occurred within minutes of each other, striking a cafe in the Nordend district and a shisha bar on the Zeil shopping street. The explosions caused significant property damage to buildings, storefronts, and parked vehicles, though no injuries were reported. One resident described the intensity of the blasts as being 'like war'.
Police have arrested a 17-year-old Dutch national in connection with the Thursday incidents. This follows the prior arrest of a 15-year-old Dutch national linked to an earlier explosion in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen.
Investigators are focusing on a phenomenon known as 'violence as a service,' where criminal syndicates allegedly recruit young individuals, often through social media, to carry out violent acts for hire. Authorities are currently reviewing a double-digit number of similar incidents across the region.
