Frankfurt launches citizen initiative for a car‑reduced, livable city centre

The Radentscheid Frankfurt initiative is preparing a new citizen petition called “Cityentscheid – autoarm und lebenswert”. The proposal, to be presented at an activation meeting on 15 August 2026 at the Saalbau Dornbusch, seeks a climate‑adapted redesign of Frankfurt’s inner city. Its core measures include cutting motor‑vehicle traffic, adding trees and green spaces, creating unsealed plazas with fountains and water mist, installing free public toilets and improving overall public‑space quality.

The effort builds on the earlier “Fahrradstadt Frankfurt” ordinance and aims to give residents a direct vote under the Hessian municipal code on how the downtown area should evolve to cope with heat waves, reduced pavement heat storage and broader climate challenges.
