Germany: Fake police gang and nursing fraud schemes indicted
German authorities have launched major operations targeting two distinct criminal activities: a fake police gang and a large-scale nursing service fraud scheme.
The Schweinfurt public prosecutor's office has indicted four individuals—one woman and three men from the Bielefeld area—for allegedly operating a fake police gang. The group is accused of defrauding seniors of more than 500,000 euros across Bavaria, Schleswig-Holstein, and North Rhine-Westphalia. The suspects allegedly used call centers to convince victims that their valuables were in danger, prompting them to hand over cash, jewelry, and gold coins to perpetrators posing as officers. Charges include commercial gang fraud, usurpation of office, and armed drug trafficking. The main suspect remains in custody.
Separately, a massive crackdown in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hessen has targeted suspected billing fraud within outpatient intensive care services. Investigators from the Wuppertal Public Prosecutor's Office and approximately 200 officials conducted raids across multiple cities, including Düsseldorf and Dortmund. The suspects, aged 20 to 54, are accused of billing health insurance companies for services that were never provided or were performed by unqualified staff. The estimated total damage is approximately 11 million euros. Authorities have frozen 5.9 million euros in assets and seized luxury vehicles, including Maybach, Mercedes AMG, and Lamborghini models.
