Frankfurt records €211 million housing boost as Hanau plans 1,400 new homes

The city of Frankfurt announced a record €211 million allocation for social housing, including €40 million from the federal stimulus program. The funding will support the construction of 71 new apartments in the Hilgenfeld district and aims to bring the total number of subsidised units in the city to 860, with 40 % of the development financed through public aid. Despite the boost, around 7,500 households (about 20 000 people) remain on the housing waiting list.

In Hanau, a symbolic groundbreaking marked the start of the MAIN AU QUARTIER project on the former industrial Bautz site. Developed by BUWOG, a Vonovia subsidiary, the plan will deliver roughly 1,400 new rental and owner‑occupied apartments, mixed‑use commercial space, a full‑range retailer and a kindergarten. Construction is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2027, with the city mayor and Vonovia executives highlighting the project’s contribution to affordable housing and sustainable urban development.
