Frankfurt reports malaria-related death amid health warnings

Authorities in Germany are warning about the risks of malaria following a reported death in Frankfurt. The deceased individual lived in the Schwanheim district near the airport, marking another case following two previous infections reported in September.

Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites, typically transmitted to humans via the bite of female Anopheles mosquitoes. While most cases in Germany occur in travelers returning from tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, and South America, a rare form known as ‘airport malaria’ can occur. In such instances, infected mosquitoes are transported via aircraft or luggage to non-endemic regions, where they can bite local residents.

Symptoms often begin with non-specific signs such as fever, headache, limb pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, which can lead to delayed diagnosis. The Plasmodium falciparum parasite is noted for causing particularly severe and life-threatening complications.
