Frankfurt researchers find semen facilitates Mpox transmission

Researchers at Goethe University and Frankfurt University Hospital have discovered that semen can facilitate the transmission of Mpox (monkeypox) between humans. The study indicates that sperm amyloids help the virus enter cells more easily, providing a biological explanation for why sexual contact carries a high risk of infection, particularly when semen comes into contact with anal or genital mucous membranes.

The findings may assist in prevention and medical practice. The research team confirmed that common antiviral medications remain effective against the virus. Additionally, experiments showed that an experimental drug could potentially disrupt the infection-promoting structures while directly inhibiting the virus.
