Franklin Sports sued over fatal badminton racket accident in Maine

The family of 6-year-old Lucy Morgan has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in York County Superior Court against Franklin Sports Inc. The lawsuit follows a June 2024 accident in Limerick, Maine, where a badminton racket used by the girl's older brother broke during use.

According to the complaint, the racket’s metal shaft detached from its handle and struck Lucy in the temple, piercing her skull. After being treated at Southern Maine Health Care and airlifted to Maine Medical Center, she died four days later. The family, who were visiting from New Jersey, alleges that the equipment was “defective and unreasonably dangerous” due to inadequate manufacturing and a failure to provide proper warnings.

Attorneys for the family claim that the manufacturer was aware of similar risks following a previous incident in New York that injured a child, but allegedly failed to implement design corrections to save costs. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for funeral expenses, emotional distress, and other related costs.
