François Bayrou proposes single candidate for 2027 election

François Bayrou, president of MoDem, has launched a political initiative seeking a single candidate for the 2027 presidential election. He aims to unite the central democratic forces, including the Socialist Party (PS) and The Republicans (LR), to prevent a potential second-round duel between the National Rally and La France Insoumise.

While Bayrou is not running himself, he is advocating for a primary involving the entire central democratic spectrum. This move comes amid varying summer strategies from other political figures: Gabriel Attal of Renaissance is maintaining an active schedule ahead of an October meeting in Lyon, while Édouard Philippe is currently on leave, with upcoming engagements in Mayotte, La Réunion, and debates scheduled for late August. So far, both the PS and LR have rejected Bayrou's proposal for a common candidacy.
