François Bayrou sparks MoDem internal tension over 2027 presidential strategy

François Bayrou, leader of the MoDem party, has sparked internal friction by proposing a primary election among parties that “reject the extremes” for the 2027 presidential race. As part of this strategy, Bayrou has publicly advocated for former European Commissioner Thierry Breton as a potential candidate.

This move has met with significant resistance and confusion from MoDem leadership. Party officials expressed frustration that the proposal was made in the press without prior consultation with party cadres. Marc Fesneau, the MoDem group leader in the National Assembly, questioned the logic of seeking a “providential man” and expressed doubt regarding whether Breton possesses the profile necessary to reach the second round of voting.

Critics within the party have further argued that Breton represents the European and industrial establishment rather than a figure of change, suggesting he may lack the necessary empathy with the electorate.
