François de Canson elected president of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur
François de Canson has been elected president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA) region. The mayor of La Londe-les-Maures succeeded Renaud Muselier, who resigned following his election to the Senate.
De Canson, a member of the right-wing majority and former third vice-president of the regional council, was the sole candidate for the position. He secured 83 votes during the session in Marseille. The National Rally (RN) remains the primary opposition in the assembly, with its 39 councillors casting blank votes during the election.
In his inaugural remarks, de Canson identified economic stability, climate change adaptation, and administrative subsidiarity as key priorities. He also addressed ongoing protests regarding the condition of high schools within the region, stating he has ordered a full assessment of the facilities to ensure they are brought back into order. The National Rally's Franck Allisio characterized the transition as a challenge for the new president, suggesting the party is breaking through previous political barriers in the region.
