François Fillon endorses Bruno Retailleau for 2027 presidency
Former French Prime Minister François Fillon has announced his support for Bruno Retailleau in the 2027 presidential election. Speaking at an event in Avignon, Fillon described Retailleau as the “only credible candidate who is clearly on the right” and capable of uniting various right-wing factions.
Fillon explicitly distanced himself from Édouard Philippe, suggesting that Philippe’s tenure under Emmanuel Macron prevents him from representing the same political logic. Fillon emphasized that the 2027 election is a decisive moment for the country, rather than a “reality TV show.”
Meanwhile, political commentary from the journal Contrepoints has raised questions regarding Retailleau’s campaign momentum. While praising his stances on immigration, economic regulation, and education, the publication suggested his proposals may appear too technocratic or timid to achieve a significant political shift. They noted that recent polling shows Retailleau’s support fluctuating between 4% and 8%, facing competition from figures such as David Lisnard.
