François Fillon suspended from Legion of Honor for ten years
Former French Prime Minister François Fillon has been suspended from the Legion of Honor and the National Order of Merit for ten years. The decision was formalized through presidential decrees published in the Journal Officiel on August 20, 2026.
This administrative sanction follows Fillon’s definitive conviction in the “Penelopegate” case, involving fictitious parliamentary assistant roles held by his wife, Penelope Fillon. On June 17, 2025, the Paris Court of Appeal sentenced him to four years of suspended prison time, a 375,000 euro fine, and five years of ineligibility for office. Fillon subsequently withdrew his appeal, making the judicial sentence final.
The ten-year suspension strips Fillon of the rights and prerogatives associated with his status as a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor and a Grand Cross of the National Order of Merit. While he remains a legal holder of these titles, he is prohibited from wearing the insignia or using the titles in official, public, or private capacities during the suspension period.
