François Hollande warns of existential crisis for Europe

Former French President François Hollande has warned that Europe is facing an 'existential crisis' due to intense pressure from global powers, specifically the United States, China, and Russia.

In an interview with El Pais, Hollande noted that the world is entering a more dangerous and harsh period. He emphasized that the 2027 French presidential elections will have implications far beyond national borders, as the outcome will shape Europe's future position in international relations.

Hollande observed that right-wing and eurosceptic political movements are shifting their strategy from attempting to leave the European Union to seeking to transform the institution from within. He noted these groups are targeting issues such as migration, digital regulation, and relations with NATO and Russia.

Regarding security, Hollande stated that European nations can no longer rely unconditionally on traditional allies. He urged Europe to develop its own industrial and technological capacities to guarantee its own security and sovereignty. He also highlighted that France faces significant economic challenges, including high budget deficits and rising debt costs, leading up to the next election cycle.
