Franz Marc exhibition opens at Kunstsammlung NRW in Düsseldorf

The Kunstsammlung NRW in Düsseldorf is hosting a major exhibition titled ‘Auf der Suche nach einer besseren Welt’ (In Search of a Better World), featuring the work of expressionist artist Franz Marc. Starting Saturday, September 12, the showcase includes more than 120 paintings and works on paper from the co-founder of the ‘Der Blaue Reiter’ movement.

This marks the first large-scale exhibition dedicated to Marc in Germany in approximately 20 years. The collection includes masterpieces borrowed from various German and international museums, as well as private collections. The exhibition traces Marc’s artistic evolution from late impressionism and his iconic colorful animal depictions—such as his famous blue horses—to his later cubist-inspired abstraction.

Franz Marc, a Munich native, produced a limited body of work consisting of approximately 244 paintings and a similar number of watercolors and drawings between 1904 and 1914. He died in 1916 during the Battle of Verdun at the age of 36.
