Franziska Brantner calls for renewal of German democracy

Franziska Brantner, leader of the German Green Party, has called for a fundamental readjustment of the relationship between the state and its citizens following the elections in Saxony-Anhalt. Brantner argued that democracy must be renewed rather than merely defended, suggesting that the current disconnect between rapid digital news cycles and slow-moving administrative processes is creating a toxic environment of mistrust.

To address this, Brantner proposed a shift toward a principle of initial trust in citizens and businesses, coupled with more targeted and rigorous enforcement against bad actors, such as tax evaders or organized crime groups. She specifically highlighted the planned abolition of blanket reporting requirements by the green-black coalition in Baden-Württemberg as a positive step toward increasing efficiency and reducing bureaucratic burdens.
