Franziska Brantner proposes European Defense Union

Franziska Brantner, leader of the German Green Party, is advocating for the creation of a “European Defense Union.” According to a speech manuscript prepared for an appearance at Vilnius University, Brantner argues that Germany should only act militarily when embedded within a European defense alliance.

Brantner suggests that a “coalition of the brave” should lead this initiative, specifically naming France, Germany, Poland, Spain, and Italy as potential pioneers. She noted that Baltic and Nordic countries offer vital experience in managing hybrid threats, while the Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom possess significant naval and defense industry capabilities.

The proposal aims to address international concerns regarding a potential far-right government in Germany. Brantner stated that the modern meaning of “never again” must signify an end to “German exceptionalism,” ensuring Germany is so deeply integrated into European structures that it cannot be turned against the European order itself.
