Franziska Giffey accuses Chancellor Friedrich Merz of lacking pride in Germany

Former family minister Franziska Giffey (SPD) criticised Chancellor Friedrich Merz, saying he shows no pride or confidence in Germany and that the government lacks a positive narrative in the current reform debate. She argued the administration focuses on "black‑painting" rather than highlighting Germany’s strengths in start‑ups, medicine, culture and quality of life, and suggested the slogan “Das Deutschland‑nach‑vorne‑Programm” for the planned reform package.

Giffey’s remarks came amid broader criticism of Merz’s stance on generational equity. The chancellor, speaking at a Young Union event, dismissed promises of generational justice, stating that younger people are a minority and that the pension system will likely remain only a basic safety net. She also highlighted the perceived neglect of youth concerns in education funding and military recruitment.

Both sets of comments reflect mounting tension within German politics over the direction of reforms, national identity and policies affecting the younger generation.
