Fraser River preservationist begins 1,000-km walk
Justin Smith, a coordinator for Fraser Riverkeeper, is undertaking a 1,000-kilometre walk along the banks of the Fraser River as part of the Fraser River Challenge. The 30-day event aims to raise awareness and funds for the preservation of local waterways.
Supported by the grassroots organization Save Our Sloughs, the challenge includes various activities such as a women-led swim relay, canoe and raft journeys, and community gatherings with First Nations. Smith began his journey on August 6 at Tête Jaune Cache and is scheduled to conclude the walk at Garry Point Park in Richmond on September 4.
Advocates for the project note that the Fraser River watershed is currently in crisis, with only 17.6 per cent of the area under protection.
