Fraser River sockeye salmon estimates cut by over 50 per cent
The Pacific Salmon Commission has reduced its estimate for the Fraser River sockeye salmon run by more than 50 per cent. The initial prediction of approximately 7.7 million fish has been downgraded to 3,496,000.
Experts from the Pacific Salmon Foundation warn that this decline may be part of a 16-year downward trend for the river’s dominant sockeye run. Historical data shows a significant decrease in returning fish; for example, roughly 28.2 million returned in 2010, compared to 11 million in 2018 and 6.6 million in 2022.
The reduced numbers cast doubt on whether recreational sockeye fishing will be permitted on the Fraser River this year. Additionally, salmon that do reach spawning grounds are facing environmental challenges, including low water levels and warm conditions caused by drought in the interior.
