Frasers Group acquires luxury retailer Harvey Nichols

Frasers Group, led by Mike Ashley, has acquired the luxury department store chain Harvey Nichols through a pre-pack deal from administrators FTI Consulting. The acquisition follows a period of significant financial distress for the retailer, which had recently warned it could run out of funds within a year.

The deal includes six UK stores located in Knightsbridge (London), Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, and Edinburgh, as well as the company’s online business, inventory, and international franchise agreements. The transaction also covers the stock and fixtures of the Dublin location, though discussions regarding that specific operation are ongoing. The OXO Restaurant in London was excluded from the sale.

This acquisition ends 35 years of ownership by Hong Kong businessman Sir Dickson Poon. Frasers Group intends to implement a significant restructuring to integrate the brand into its luxury-focused ‘elevation strategy’. This process will involve reviewing the store portfolio, organizational structure, and operating costs. While the deal secures over 1,000 jobs, Frasers executives noted that the turnaround may require tough decisions, potentially resulting in a smaller business in the near term.
