Monte dei Paschi di Siena: Political debate intensifies over future ownership

Political and regional leaders in Italy are debating the future of Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS) amid discussions regarding its ownership and market integration. The Democratic Party (PD) has criticized Fratelli d'Italia, arguing that the state has a constitutional duty under Article 47 to protect savings and must evaluate whether financial operations could harm collective interests, such as employment and local economic stability.

Regional leaders are also intervening. Tuscany President Eugenio Giani has called for the state to maintain its approximately 5% stake in the bank to ensure the institution remains a unified entity with its headquarters and management in Siena. This stance is being presented ahead of a meeting with Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti.

Labor unions representing MPS employees have expressed a need to review any new industrial projects or integration scenarios. They emphasized that any restructuring must prioritize the safeguarding of jobs, professional development, and the bank's historical connection to its territories.
