Sicilian center-right parties navigate internal tensions ahead of 2026 elections
Political maneuvering is intensifying within the center-right coalition in Sicily ahead of the 2026 regional elections. In the Agrigento constituency, Fratelli d'Italia is positioning itself to become the leading party, building on its performance in recent municipal elections where it secured five seats in the provincial capital.
In Siracusa, Fratelli d'Italia and Forza Italia have issued a joint statement regarding the potential mayoral candidacy of Giuseppe Carta. The two parties emphasized that no agreement has been reached concerning Carta or any other candidate. They stressed that a shared political and administrative program must be established through coalition discussions before any individual candidacies are formalized.
Internal tensions are also being noted in Palermo, where Fratelli d'Italia faces challenges within the majority coalition, and through specific demands for the resignation of regional assessors related to urban security and maintenance issues.
