Fraternity hazing investigations and prevention efforts
Authorities in Madison, Wisconsin, are investigating an alleged hazing incident at an Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi) fraternity house. Police responded to an anonymous tip and discovered approximately 30 partially clothed young men in a sweltering basement. The room was reportedly set to 81 degrees, and the individuals were found covered in food, condiments, and other liquids. Officers noted signs of potential physical assault, including redness and marks on several pledges. While the University of Wisconsin-Madison terminated the chapter over a decade ago, the AEPi national organization stated it still recognizes the Madison chapter.
In a separate effort to combat such incidents, Florida Atlantic University (FAU) held its annual Anti-Hazing Summit. During the event, mothers of hazing victims, Rae Ann Gruver and Evelyn Piazza, addressed students to urge the recognition and prevention of hazing within student organizations. FAU President Adam Hasner, who authored the Chad Meredith Act—a law making hazing a crime in Florida regardless of a victim's willingness—opened the ceremony.
