Fraud and deception tactics target vulnerable populations
Fraudulent schemes and sophisticated scams result in billions of dollars in annual losses, increasingly targeting vulnerable populations such as children and older adults. Criminals are employing advanced tactics, including artificial intelligence for voice cloning, to impersonate trusted individuals like grandchildren in emergency scenarios.
Common methods include impersonating government agencies or banks via phone, text, or email to demand funds for “safe accounts,” as well as tech support pop-ups that claim a computer has a virus to gain remote access. Other prevalent tactics involve romance scams on social media, door-to-door fraudulent sales, and charity requests. Experts emphasize that scammers often create a sense of fear or urgency to manipulate victims into taking immediate, unthinking action.
