Fraud and embezzlement cases reported in Austria and Germany
Authorities in Austria and Germany are investigating separate cases of significant financial fraud and embezzlement.
In Styria, Austria, a lawyer is facing new allegations of embezzling approximately 1.6 million euros in client funds. The suspect, who specialized in adult representation for individuals with disabilities or mental illnesses, reportedly self-reported the missing funds. The embezzlement is believed to date back to 2017. Following the discovery of account discrepancies, the lawyer resigned her license and her firm filed for bankruptcy. Investigators are currently reviewing new reports to determine if the total damages exceed the initial 1.6 million euro estimate.
In Herrsching, Germany, a 62-year-old former cultural manager received a suspended prison sentence after defrauding victims of several hundred thousand euros. The woman confessed to forging a certificate of ownership for a million-euro Stradivari violin from 1711. Using the fake document as collateral, she obtained funds from an instrument dealer and a former partner. The Starnberg District Court sentenced her to thirteen months of imprisonment, suspended for a three-year probation period.
