Brazil reports surge in sophisticated digital fraud and scams
Various regions in Brazil are experiencing a rise in sophisticated digital scams and physical thefts. In Araçatuba, a man lost R$ 40,000 to a criminal posing as a lawyer through social engineering and video calls. Similarly, in Praia Grande, an entrepreneur lost R$ 163,000 after scammers impersonated her lawyer and used real judicial process details to create convincing fake documents.
In Joinville, the judiciary denied compensation to a woman who fell victim to a fake lawyer scam, ruling that financial institutions were not at fault because the victim authorized the Pix transfers herself. Other notable incidents include a R$ 43,900 cryptocurrency investment scam in Araçatuba, a R$ 16,500 vehicle sale fraud in São Pedro do Ivaí involving impersonation on social media, and a R$ 22,000 embezzlement scheme by a fish market employee in Maceió.
Law enforcement has also intervened in physical crimes, such as the arrest of three individuals in Imbé attempting a fake real estate sale and the investigation of a jewelry theft in Belo Horizonte.
