Fraud prevention and rental law updates in Czechia and Slovakia
Legal and law enforcement updates in the Czech Republic and Slovakia highlight new approaches to financial fraud and rental management.
In the Czech Republic, new legislation effective October 1, 2025, introduces a ‘super-benefit’ designed to assist tenants in arrears. Under Law No. 151/2025 Sb., the Labor Office may be authorized to transfer a portion of social benefits directly to a landlord to prevent housing loss. This measure aims to ensure housing costs are covered before funds are spent elsewhere, providing a tool for landlords dealing with tenants who are unable to pay.
In Slovakia, police authorities are adjusting how they handle fraud cases involving senior citizens. While the legal principle of ‘ordinary degree of caution’ often allows prosecutors to dismiss cases where victims voluntarily handed over credentials or cash, criminal police chief Attila Zajonc stated that officers will no longer automatically dismiss cases involving the elderly. Recognizing that individuals over sixty process stress and pressure differently than younger generations, police will now evaluate each senior fraud case individually alongside prosecutors to ensure they are not overlooked.
