Fraudsters impersonating Carabinieri target residents in Italy

Fraudsters impersonating Carabinieri officers have attempted to target residents in the Italian towns of Nerola and Laglio through telephone scams. In these incidents, callers falsely identified themselves as law enforcement officials to create sense of urgency, attempting to trick victims into preparing cash and valuables for handover to an accomplice.

In Nerola, several attempts were reported targeting elderly residents in the historic center and surrounding hamlets. This follows a previous incident in April where two individuals from Naples were arrested after attempting to scam a 75-year-old woman using a similar tactic. In Laglio, residents successfully identified the fraudulent nature of the calls and reported them to the 112 emergency number.

The Carabinieri have issued warnings to the public, particularly to elderly citizens and their families, advising them to remain vigilant. Authorities emphasize that law enforcement agencies will never request money or valuables via telephone or at a residence, and urge citizens to contact 112 immediately if they encounter suspicious calls.
