Fraudulent electronic payment schemes reported in Chile and Argentina

In Chile, Deputy Jaime Araya has requested an investigation by the Comptroller General regarding the electronic payment system of TransAntofagasta. Users have reported irregular deductions of up to $35,000, often labeled as “Corrección saldo” (balance correction), without clear explanation. Other complaints include double charges for single trips, failure to credit recharges, and unauthorized charges on days when no travel occurred. While the company Bipay attributed some issues to intermittent processing errors, Araya is seeking to determine if these corrections had technical and administrative backing and if proper oversight was exercised.

In Argentina, a service station in San Martín was the target of a fraud resulting in a loss of 38 million pesos. Criminals replaced the establishment's standard payment terminal (Posnet) with a fraudulent device that redirected customer payments to different bank accounts. The scheme went undetected until internal controls identified discrepancies between sales and credited funds. Security footage captured the equipment replacement, and authorities are currently investigating the linked bank accounts and suspects.
