Fraudulent online shops impersonate regional family businesses
Consumer protection agencies are warning of a growing trend where fraudulent online shops impersonate regional family businesses to deceive customers. These fake shops often use URLs that combine a first name with a German city, such as ‘anna-berlin.de’ or ‘stefanberlin.de’, to create a false sense of local tradition and trust.
According to the Verbraucherzentrale Niedersachsen, these scammers frequently claim they are closing their business to justify offering massive discounts of up to 80 percent. This tactic, combined with emotional storytelling and artificial urgency, is designed to pressure consumers into quick purchases.
Despite the appearance of local proximity, the legal imprints often reveal that the companies are actually based in locations such as Wyoming, USA, or Hong Kong. Furthermore, return addresses are frequently located in East Asia. Legal expert Kathrin Bartsch notes that while the discounts are high, the quality of the goods is usually poor, and the high cost of international returns often makes the consumer's right of withdrawal practically useless.
