Fraudulent phone scams targeting bank accounts and families
Authorities are warning against sophisticated telephone scams designed to extort money through psychological pressure and identity theft. In Mexico, Condusef has issued an alert regarding a 'vishing' scheme where criminals pose as bank security employees. These scammers claim that the Tax Administration Service (SAT) has detected irregular movements, specifically mentioning a fraudulent deposit of 50,000 pesos to create urgency. They often threaten to freeze accounts to prevent victims from verifying the claims, eventually requesting passwords, security codes, or transfers to 'safe' accounts.
In Argentina, investigations have uncovered a criminal organization operating from prisons in Buenos Aires province. This group used fake police identities to claim family members were in legal trouble or had been in accidents, demanding immediate cash payments. The network included inmates making calls and accomplices on the outside who collected the money or, in some cases, resorted to physical violence and home invasions to rob victims.
