Udo di Fabio emerges as potential German President successor

Speculation is intensifying regarding the successor to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. While Ilse Aigner has been considered a frontrunner for the Union, former Federal Constitutional Court judge Udo di Fabio has emerged as a significant potential candidate within CDU circles.

Di Fabio, a 72-year-old legal scholar and professor at the University of Bonn, is described as a “streitbarer Konservativer” (combative conservative). He maintains a long-standing relationship with Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who has previously commissioned legal opinions from him.

The Federal Assembly is scheduled to elect the new head of state on January 30, 2027, following the conclusion of Steinmeier’s second term on March 18, 2027. While no official nomination has been made, political discussions suggest the Union may seek a legal expert to navigate constitutional challenges involving the AfD.
