Fraunhofer IKTS develops real-time packaging defect detection system

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS) have developed a new inspection system through the ‘OCTInline’ project. Using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), the system can detect defects in seal seams in real time during the packaging process.

Originally developed for ophthalmology, OCT uses near-infrared light to create high-resolution, three-dimensional images of internal structures. This allows for the non-destructive identification of material flaws, air inclusions, or insufficient welding without damaging the product or packaging. The system is capable of detecting pores as small as eight micrometers.

The technology has been integrated directly into the sealing process of an industrial partner's packaging machine. It operates continuously at production speeds of up to 25 meters per minute, providing a critical quality control measure for regulated sectors such as the medical and food industries.
