Fraunhofer IKTS expands research facilities in Bitterfeld-Wolfen

The Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS) is expanding its research infrastructure in the Bitterfeld-Wolfen chemical park to advance the circular economy. The institute is establishing a technology platform for circular economy and process engineering (TKV), which includes the construction of new laboratories and specialized pilot plants over the next four years.

The project aims to bridge the gap between laboratory research and large-scale industrial application. By providing a testing environment with modular pilot plants, the platform will allow companies to test innovative processes under realistic conditions. Key technological focus areas include membrane technology, hydrometallurgy, online sensor technology and process digitalization, as well as bioeconomy and controlled environment agriculture.

A primary objective is the recovery of critical raw materials from industrial wastewater and complex waste streams. This initiative is intended to strengthen industrial sustainability and mitigate risks associated with global supply chains and rising raw material costs. The development is supported by funding from the state and the European Union.
