Fraunhofer Institutes launch tools to measure smart‑city impacts and boost AI‑driven emergency response for German towns
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Labour and Organisation (IAO) and the German Institute of Urban Affairs (Difu), together with the Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Regional Research, have produced a practice guide for municipalities. The guide presents a six‑step model to assess the spatial effects of smart‑city measures—such as traffic‑signal prioritisation for public transport or parking‑sensor deployment—using measurable goals, indicators and continuous evaluation. It includes three case studies from German communes and recommendations on resources, knowledge‑management and data handling. The work is part of the federal “Model Projects Smart Cities” programme operating since 2019.
In a related development, Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Systems (IIS) unveiled new network and platform solutions for municipal and smart‑city use. The low‑power IoT technology mioty® enables reliable, energy‑autonomous sensor communication even when mobile networks are unavailable, supporting flood, fire and other hazard monitoring. Together with the AI‑based platforms KoGe (municipal hazard analysis) and ARGOS (automated brownfield detection using satellite imagery), the solutions provide fast data collection, risk forecasting and decision‑support for urban planners and emergency services.
Both initiatives aim to give German cities and towns robust, data‑driven tools for sustainable development and rapid response to emergencies.
