Fraunhofer ISE CalLab celebrates 40 years and 152 solar records

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its CalLab calibration laboratory. Over its history, the lab has confirmed 152 solar efficiency records, including 86 for solar cells and 66 for PV modules.

The most recent record confirmed by the lab is a solar module developed by AZUR SPACE, temicon, and Fraunhofer ISE, which achieved an efficiency of 34.4 percent, making it the most efficient solar module in the world.

While traditional silicon-based modules are approaching their physical efficiency limits, research is shifting toward tandem and multi-junction solar cells. The lab previously confirmed a world record for a quadruple solar cell made of various semiconductor materials with an efficiency of 47.6 percent.
