Fraunhofer ISE validates industrial heat pumps for 160 °C process steam

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) has validated industrial heat pumps capable of generating process steam at temperatures up to 160 °C. This technology is designed to replace coal and gas combustion in industrial processes and district heating networks.

Through the FernWP research project, Fraunhofer ISE developed a specialized test bench to characterize high-temperature systems. The research focuses on the interplay between heat sources, refrigerants—such as butane—heat exchangers, and hydraulic integration. Experts emphasize that simply scaling up components from building refrigeration or air conditioning is insufficient for industrial needs.

Project leader Dr. Ursula Wittstadt noted that for a heat pump to effectively replace gas, the entire installation must be properly dimensioned to provide efficient and reliable steam or pressurized hot water, even when facing varying heat sources, loads, and operating modes.
